sudo apt-get update seems to think that the error is still there. Humour
me, and check that the bottom lines have a proper http:// prefix (sudo
gedit /etc/apt/sources.list).

The applet you described in your toolbar is a generic "something's wrong
with the software system" warning.

I get this when I try to open Synaptic...it doesn't say where to repoort it so 
here it is: E: malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (URI 
parse) E: the list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to 
correct the problem. E:_ cache>open()failed, please report
