The only way i can get ipw3945 to work is to disable encryption on my
router and manually with ¨ifconfig¨, iwconfig¨ and ¨route add¨ configure
my wireless. This is what i get when i attempt to use the network
settings:

eth1 unassociated ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Frequency=nan kHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power:16 dBm
          Retry limit:15 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:33 Missed beacon:0

even though at times it does give the correct iwconfig settings, but is
a hit and miss affair.

I will now try to configure my encrpytion from the command line and see
what happens. But first a reboot to see if these manual settings hold or
will network settings override them on reboot.

Well at least i have ipw3945 working :-) in a fassion.
