Hi Larry,
Although one of your hard drives is obviously having problem, I think
this issue is more likely related to your video card, as you suggested.
There are some errors in your Xorg.0.log. Is this issue always
reproducible or does it only occur sometimes? If you disable the
proprietary ATI driver (fglrx) does it still occur? What version of
Ubuntu are you running now?
