David,

I'm currently running version 9.04 of Ubuntu. The issue only occurs
sometimes. The symptoms vary. Usually the screen is cleared of all useful
information. The last occurrence was different from all previous. The
browser windows were duplicated, but displaced and overlaying the original
windows, but clicking on buttons had no effect. I couldn't reboot using the
mouse, but I could change workspace from one to another.

I'm getting lazy in my retirement. I should remove the failing hard drive,
but like you, I don't think that it's causing the video problem. I haven't
tried disabling the ATI driver. How do I do that? What are the
ramifications of doing it? What do I lose?
