More information: I removed and reinserted the appletouch kernel module, and things improved. The sensitivity increased to the point of being usable, and tap-to-click started working.
However, the advanced features of the trackpad still don't work: No double-tap-and-hold-to-drag No two-finger right click No scrolling Also, this is under the live-cd.
