Dear Steve, I already rebooted since I filed the bug. I think that the bug is related to mysql-server 5.1 bug, which prevents synaptic from updating the system and causes synaptic be stuck on trying to install (or uninstall) mysql-server. Unfortunately, I do not remember the actions I took before the current bug (libpam-runtime) appeared - I think I removed mysql-server from the package lists used by synaptic. I'll try to be more precise next time I file a bug report (this is my first one). Eyal
