Okay, this is strange. I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS, the wireless did not function after the update, but when I did install linux- firmware-nonfree the wireless started to work and it connected to the network. The big (?) difference in this situation is that my older computer where it did not work, had USB 1.1 ports and this one has 2.0. The motherboard is ASUS A7V333-X.
