After updating to the latest drivers I can say that the problem is very much improved but not completely absent. With visual effects disabled the problem is virtually non-existent even with (cpu being pushed hard) With visual effects enabled the problem is noticeable but reduced.
Other notes: I've mostly been testing the audio with mkv playback via VLC, switching the default audio output from default to pulseaudio gives more improvements to the clicking popping problems though I have no idea why.
