Thanks for your reply. I disagree with your argument: the fact that
people don't know this directory exists is why browsing should start
there. $HOME is always accessible from the left-hand pane. In the event
of a downloaded certificate, it would probably be saved to the
$HOME/Downloads directory, so one has to navigate away from $HOME
anyway, and Downloads is also on the left-hand pane.

The OS-dependence of the certs directory is a good point, but there must
be a way of determining where to find the CA certificates for any given
OS. The directory under /etc in the case of Ubuntu, by the way, seems to
hold those certificates for automatic use by web browsers; the originals
are under /usr/share/ca-certificates, although they are organized in
directories according to the issuing authority which might be a bit
confusing for the purposes of NetworkManager.

Another good option would be to keep $HOME as the starting directory for
the dialogue, but adding the certs directory to the shortcuts on the
left-hand pane, much like the dialogue for selecting the icon for a
.desktop launcher has /usr/share/pixmaps there.
