If you have more than one user on your system could you try logging in as another user and see if the same problem occurs? If you do not have more than one user you could log into a console virtual terminal by pressing Ctl+Alt+F4 when the login screen appears. Then login as yourself and execute 'sudo adduser mary' this will create a newuser named mary. Then execute 'sudo passwd mary' to set the password for mary and try logging in as that user.
