Took me awhile to notice that...
If true, that there should be No Option to open a dir. with anything other than 
the file manager, well that's just ridiculous.

If you can't fix the true issue here then you should return the user's
ability to set a default folder handler which is the jist of the other
bugs though the intent was different - ( people just wanted to remove
items from the 'open with' list.,

Or you all can continue to ignore this though each day more and more
people are wondering why such and such is opening from their   places
menu

Also worth noting that in 9.10 and 10.04 you can use  'open with other
application' and not change the default from nautilus
