Ken: could you also investigate/possibly prepare (but not upload) what would need to be done in order to change the default hinting level (the posh manual hinting doesn't get used below "fullhint"). it probably possible to do this either via gconf, or dropping a font-specific match into '/etc/fonts/conf.d/*'.
