See my comment at #3 above. I assume it is no longer a problem but cannot confirm as I subsequently used the new default DejaVu Sans font in Karmic and Lucid. Presumably it would only be a problem if a user was still using Bitstream Vera fonts and they were automatically removed by an upgrade. As ttf-bitstream-vera fonts have not be offered since Jaunty I think you can reasonably assume that the problem has faded away. However, for the future if a policy is taken to remove a font and replace it with another during upgrade the user should be warned before the old font is removed and offered to keep it.
