I have been successful in bypassing this problem by reinstalling 10.04
from the live CD and using the Ext3 file system. Thus I get ERROR: Out
of disk but the computer proceeds to boot and updated kernels have not
caused the system to stop working.

The previous installation had been with Ext4 with the partition aligned
to the cylinders as this allowed the installation to proceed
successfully. However I guess the problem was something to do with Ext4
and updates not being aligned correctly at a very low level.

I hope this information helps.
