I have the same problem when I put my laptop in sleep an then wake it up again. Sometimes I manage to restore the wifi led by running sudo service udev --full-restart sudo service network-manager --full-restart sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with 2.6.32-25 kernel. My laptop is an Acer 1410.
