@JB, hmm, I'm not even sure you what that switch in "Startup program"
actually does.

This is just an idea; it might be that you need an SKU override, since that's 
one of the things changing between 2.6.32 and 2.6.35. Could you try the 
following:
1) Make sure you don't have any alsa drivers installed (apart from the one that 
comes with Ubuntu)
2) Download and install 
http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-realtek-ignore-sku-dkms_1.0.23.diwic_all.deb
3) reboot
4) Check if this changes behaviour with regards to both mics and 
speakers/headphones.
