I built modemmanager version 0.3 (the version that ist used in Lucid) and that works! The version of network-manager is still 0.8.1+git.20100810t184654.ab580f4-0ubuntu2. So it seems to be an issue of modemmanager 0.4. The debug log files of modemmanager and networkmanager are attached.
