Okay, let's revisit this one. Looking at the code and the codec, it looks like
model=ideapad *should* have worked for the mic stuff (as suggested in #33).
Could you please verify:
- Install Maverick
- Install https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
- reboot
- verify that the neither internal nor external mic is working
- paste an alsa-info into the bug, with the external mic plugged in?

Further research gives an explanation to my comment #42 is that in
Karmic had no special support for this codec, which meant that a generic
driver was used instead. This generic "fallback" driver is seldom used,
but in this case it seemed to have worked ok...
