This is just to confirm that I had the same problem with Padre on Ubuntu 10.10
(Maverick, 32Bit), with a fresh installation of all components.
The workaround to directly install wx-perl from CPAN helps.
Ubuntu versions: Padre = 0.63.ds1-1
libwxgtk2.8-0 = 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu4
Alien::wxWidgets = 0.50
Wx = 0.9702-1
CPAN versions: Alien::wxWidgets = 0.51
Wx = 0.98
