I've been running lucid (10.04) for about a month now. Haven't seen exactly the same symptoms anymore. Instead i'm seeing this bug now:
Fatal server error: Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error X server fails to restart, but lets me power down the computer and reboot. I've found at least a dozen bug reports with more less similar symptoms and i'm not yet sure, if one of them might actually describe the bug i'm seeing. I'll investigate more.
