Public bug reported:

I have a new Sony VAIO VPC-B11KGX/B. I installed a fresh Ubuntu
starting with Maverick. It is currently on Maverick, using the ALSA
team PPA due to a reported bug on sound (yet unrepaired), but otherwise
default kernel. I added blacklist of intel_ips due to an existing
reported bug on this module, also yet unrepaired.

Problem is as follows. Occasionally, on closing the laptop lid, suspend
fails. I noticed it once before after it had sat in my bag,
overheating, for hours and eventually drained its battery. This time, I
noticed after only a couple of hours and plugged it back in.

After plugging it back in I observed that the fan continued to spin high
for about 15 minutes, with no sign of getting cooler (possible high CPU
usage?). I opened it, and the display was the typical black terminal I
normally observe on unsuspending, consisting of a couple of system
messages and what appears like service output with the [ OK ].

However, the machine remained unresponsive. It ignored alt-f1 and magic
sysrq emergency sync, and when plugged into the network, was unpingable
and I was unable to SSH into it. Fan usage stayed high, and I was
unable to use magic sysrq to shut it down semi-gracefully, so I was
forced to power it off.

In terms of what I did prior to suspend, I had unplugged the ethernet
cable and connection to external monitor, then perhaps 15s later
(network manager had already reported it was disconnected in the gui),
closed the lid. I had no applications open.

On startup, I checked syslog, but it was uninformative. I've included
it below, however:
