I can confirm this behaviour on my Eeepc 900 w/ Ubuntu 10.10. In fact,
it's a little broader. For me, the computer won't wake up after closing
the lid, even when it is set only to blank the screen. So I have to
cycle power EVERY time I close and re-open the lid--I have yet to find a
setting that will allow me to close it with re-booting. Shortly, if I
have some free time, I'll try ssh'ing in when it's apparently locked and
try to see if it's the kernel or X that's dying (but I can't get to a
console when it's stuck.)

This is pretty annoying limitation--I'll be going back to Eeebuntu if I
can't get it resolved.

if this is an ACPI issue, it may be relevant that 10.10 also can't
correctly read the battery capacity or state of charge on the Eeepc 900.
it gets something, because it does warn me about low battery, but it
never gives me a percentage. It also tells me every time it re-boots
that the battery "may be broken".
