This is still an issue in Abiword 2.8.6-0.1build1 in Natty Narwhal. In
Xubuntu 10.04, Abiword simply fails silently. A simple workaround is to
use the help available from the Help menu. The Help -> Help Contents is
an online help direct from Abiword website, and is searchable.
