Hmm, maybe you had a corrupt default.pa in your home directory before copying 
the fresh one in?
Anyway, the default should be what it is - no file in ~/.pulse i e using the 
default in /etc/pulse and for people who want advanced modifications, be able 
to copy it to .pulse.

Does the problem reappear if you remove ~/.pulse/default.pa?
