This gives the impression that your /var/cache/cups/ppds.dat was broken.
Perhaps one should suggest to CUPS developers that this file gets
somehow checked on CUPS startup.

Another thing which CUPS developers could make better is the way the web
interface builds its lists. It seems that it calls the process of
listing the available PPDs (cups-driverd list) twice, once for the
manufacturers and once for the model. Would be better if it buffers the
output of the first call and re-uses it for the models. This would make
the web interface only need half the time.

Also some kind of "Please wait" screen in the web interface during
printer detection, model list building, and PPD generation would be
nice.

I suggest you to post feature requests on CUPS for these things, via
http://www.cups.org/str.php
