Thanks for the replies, but neither of those suggestions work for me. As to installing pavucontrol, I had already done that. I did find a workaround that does work at http://ubuntu- ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1552196&page=2. The steps are:
1) Add the line options snd-hda-intel model=auto to alsa-base.conf 2) In Synaptic Package Manager, uninstall Pulse-Audio completely 3) Install GNOME Alsa Mixer and use that to configure all sound devices. By doing this I got back full functionality on sound recording. The downsize is that Pulse Audio is gone, along with the speaker icon in the panel. But it does work.
