It is still an issue for me. Unfotunately apport seems to be broken on
my machine.

I too get the black screen unless I remove the "set
gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode" line. I haven't tried using "text".

I have found that, while on the 'black' screen, pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL
twice and then ENTER will reboot the system, as it calls up the
rebooting options and defaults to Restart (even though I can't see it).
