This is still an error in 10.04 , and also in Ubuntu Studio 10.04.
I get the message when I attach my USB A/D D/A device from Behringer,
which has lineout level audio out:

Jan 24 16:49:58 wedge pulseaudio[1857]: alsa-mixer.c: Your kernel driver is
broken: it reports a volume range from 0.00 dB to 0.00 dB which makes no sense.
In this case, a volume range from 0 dB to 0 dB _does_ make sense. It's
line level output. The kernel driver should understand such devices if
Ubuntu Studio wants to be treated seriously as a digital audio
workstation.
