Another dell studio 1558 user here, I tried two different solutions
found on the internet for this bug.

Solution 1: Downgrade package pm-utls from version 1.4.1-3(Maverick) to 
1.3.0-1ubuntu1(Lucid)
It works well but still suffers from random freezing (Several times per day)

Solution 2 as described in comment #50: 
It works for the first 30 minutes, and then freezes. I don't know for how long 
other 1558 users tried on their laptops.
I tried twice on mine and both froze after 25-30minutes.

So far, this has been a serious problem to the daily use of my 1558 since I 
need to unplug the adapter several times during 
the day for meetings. And it looks like there won't be a fix for this until the 
next major release. I am consider rolling back to Lucid as one of my colleagues 
did.
