The log shows that you answered the default, which is 'no', not 'yes'.
You installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which includes grub2 by default, but
have manually replaced it with grub1 (the 'grub' package) without
configuring grub for use as a bootloader. You either need to configure
grub1 (by saying 'yes' here and *also* installing grub1 to your MBR,
which is not done automatically), or preferably you should reinstall
grub2 by running the following command from a terminal:
sudo apt-get install grub-pc
