I have ASUS K42Jv laptop too.
I use Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit and I made update (on 2.6.35-25 kernel version) and
now no sound from speakers and headphone
my kernels:
2.6.35-22
2.6.35-24
2.6.35-25
I tried update alsa from src but It isnt help ( in earlier ubuntu version it
was help with my earlier laptop)
I tried some workaround from ubuntu and other forums but no fix this issues.
I tried all of modify on /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf from others forums.
I tried resintall kernel, and reinstall alsa driver module.
I removed pulseaudio.
