Sorry for not quite understanding the point of the sound menu extension, it 
appears to be used to allow one to 'minimize' banshee to the soundmenu
so clearly it should be installed and enabled,  and disabling the option to 
show seems to make things ok.

That does however lead to what i mentioned before about the global menu 
disappearing, have found how to repeat. 
(I was testing this for the most part on the Classic > gnome-panel login with 
global menus disabled.

While a separate bug will mention here.

In the unity login  - 
open banshee, start track, close with X button. Music continues to play and is 
controllable from sound menu.
Restore banshee from the soundmenu - the global menu is gone

On the other hand, same as above but instead minimize banshee to
launcher, then when restored from soundmenu the global menu is retained.
