I downloaded
        linux-headers-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201102231436_amd64.deb
23-Feb-2011 15:56 799K
and
        linux-image-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201102231436_amd64.deb
23-Feb-2011 15:55 34M
then ran
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
and rebooted to the 2.6.38-999 option in grub.
All quite scary, frankly, as I am not good at this sort of thing.

So thanks for the help, but I am still stuck on this one.
