There are a large number of documents out there the describe Alt+F2 as a means to enter a command. Why should this functionality not be available with Unity?
Personally, if Alt+F2 is to be enhanced, I'd take a look at OS X's Spotlight for an example of good usability. At present, I am amazed at how many things there are that are more difficult to achieve with Unity than with the classic Gnome UI.
