I believe I've solved the problem by re-installing Lucid. Trouble shooting I found that my Alsa setting were: Alsa 1.0.24 drivers, Alsa 1.023 Lib and Alsa 1.0.23 Util. I could not find a way to get them all to "agree" and since the sound worked on a "Live Distro mode", I decided to try a complete re-install. It has worked through several boot ups. I do not know how this happened, but I now doubt it was a "bug".
