I use Intel DG31PR and face the same problem. I did find a workaround though. Instead of plugging in the audio jack in the on-board line-out, I connect it to the front audio output on my cabinet. Sound works perfectly. This is true for Ubuntu versions 8.10 to 10.10. I use 10.10 as of now.
