I'm having the exact same issue. 
The difference is that I didn't know how to manually get the wireless going 
with iwconfig, so the way I thought was to restart gdm.

Well... here is another information that might prove useful: I couldn't
:) // I can stop gdm, but I cannot start it again. And not only it
crashes, but it also takes down with it the ttys I use to restart it.

Good news is that I can still properly (gently) bring the system down
with the power button

(I sertainly can't say if any of this info might prove useful, but I
thought I should try)
