We really should be treating these two issues separately since they
concern very different aspects of the system. For your printer, could
you please file a new separate bug, using the 'ubuntu-bug cups' command?
Once you've done so please report the bug number here so we can take a
look at your problem.
As for the microphone, can you see it listed in the sound settings, and
if you try to produce sound, can you see the level meter move? It's
possible that the sound card has the input muted too, so you might want
to verify that in the sound settings as well.
