Also I don't think Knuth is the only one who could possibly care about this: some binaries actually run slower on x86-64 than on x86 (up to 10% from numbers I've seen) and the only possible reason for this slowdown AFAIK is the bigger pointers on x86-64 and the resulting effects on dcache and icache.
