Mark, I believe this is correct behavior: the screen remains dark until the mouse is moved or until a key is pressed because upon going into suspend, the screensaver is started (which happens to be what locks the screen). I think there should be a slight difference in brightness of the screen anyway, or the screen should be getting out of ... standby (usually shown by the power light changing colors, or some other change). Can you confirm this?
