I have good news !

Following the previous attempt posted above, I next went to the Software
Centre --> Software Sources --> Ubuntu Software and checked ON the
Canonical-supported Open Source software (main).  It was checked OFF
before.  See attached screen shot.

Then I went through the previous steps as posted above.
The upgrade proceeded through to success.

cgranberg@cgranberg-laptop:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=maverick
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.10"
