Here's an example of working monochrome screening from the foo2hp driver. Note the different dot sizes at different greyscale values, which is as it should be. It looks better than this scan indicates, as the scanner has somewhat overemphasized small variations in the paper, but this should give a good idea of what it produces in greyscale mode.
