I have this device (RS880) on a Gateway laptop. I can't set the capture mode on the mic with amixer or alsamixer.

I'm not sure why amixer considers that command to be invalid. Perhaps the control does not support capture mode. (Why not?) In alsamixer, pressing spacebar on the control does nothing. It is also worth noting that alsamixer considers all the *Mic devices to be outputs as well as inputs.
