Sorry to abbreviate.

        1.  Normally Update Manager has 'automatically started' on its own -
I'm Not starting it manually from the menu.

        2.  As one might expect from a normal newbie - I click  "Install
Updates" 

        3.  Not much happens, except the spinning wheel icon.

        4.  No password dialog displays - see number 3 above.

What I discovered was a workaround which involved clicking   Settings
first, and then closing them, before clicking "Install Updates"   

but this is non-obvious and inconvenient.

The other behavior (described above in the numbered steps) is useless
and frustrating.
