Ran into this same issue when I tried to uncheck the Enhanced Zoom Desktop plugin (which didn't seem to be serving any purpose as all the internal settings are set to 'disabled').
Got the same results when I installed ccsm and tested the same operation on a clean install under VirtualBox. Only fix I could figure was to 'rm -rf .gconf/apps/compiz*' to blow away my settings.
