Not all sound cards are supported, and it makes sense to go with one that is. 
Sometimes, if the vendor has closed-source code or does not adequately release 
specifications, it is very difficult to both construct and maintain the driver. 
For instance, my Creative SoundBlaster X-fi pc card used to deliver good sound 
but now does not. (It uses a different driver than your Creative product.)

This page is a useful reference. For instance, it simply says that my X-fi card 
does not work. Well, that's wrong. It did work pretty well and now works 
poorly.
