Embarrassingly, I have determined that I have not actually experienced
this bug on *any* machines. Instead, while working at the Lubuntu Natty
amd64 machine, I entered the command "software-center" into the wrong
Terminal window, causing it to run on the Ubuntu Natty i386 machine
running Unity. But since X11 was not forwarded through this SSH
connection, it was, quite correctly, unable to open the display.
I am removing the amd64 tag, unmarking bug 762995 as a duplicate of this
bug, and marking bug 762995 as Invalid. I am also going to change the
status of this bug back from Confirmed to New, because while it's been
reported by three people (not including my report, which was erroneous),
it has not been reported (besides by me) with the latest version of
software-center.
To the people who have experienced this bug: If you can continue to
produce this with the latest version of software-center on Natty, and
you can confirm that the way you're running the Software Center isn't
similar to the way I am running it, then I recommend changing this bug's
status back to Confirmed.
I apologize for the unfortunate complication that I have caused.
