Update: I just reinstalled 11.04, and selected the option to update while installing. Though it updated most, it did not update all, and I was able to run the older, NVIDIA version 173 (the latest my card can safely run) to good effect. But when i chose to update it again, after the initial update during installation, I unchecked any update for Jockey, xorg, kernel drivers, gtk, metacity, or Unity with the intention of narrowing down the culprits. After updating, however, even with all those updates unchecked, Unity is once again broken. I will begin work again in the morning to figure out which update is breaking my machine.
