Andy, as both of us have the same graphics card, I'll tell you what's working for me; reinstall, but during the install, connect your machine to the internet and check "upgrade during installation" (word of advice, dont select install the mp3 plugins, they never work for me, just install ubuntu-restricted-extras later). After installation, activate the NVIDIA version 173 driver, the newer one won't work. After that, don't update your machine for a while, what I'm doing is updating my machine, 10 updates at a time and writing the packages i'm updating first. So far, all updates up to gnome-settings-daemon (they're in alphabetical order) work without breaking Unity, and I'm still updating now, 10 at a time. Once I hit an update that breaks Unity, I'll let launchpad know.
