My system is also ASUS A6J with an ATI RADEON X1600.
I can also confirm that the latest the desktop version (live-cd of the
release candidate) will not start X.
I installed the server version and installed ubuntu-desktop but X will
not start. Tried rerconfiguring X(dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg) with
different resolution and driver types withouth any success.
A major show stopper!!!
